Grand Prix Rules
The Scarborough Chess Club Grand Prix is a competition between all SCC members designed to recognize participation and individual achievement. This is distinct from the Club Championship which recognizes the strongest players in the club. The Grand Prix is based on a member's participation and performance over the whole chess season (September to June).
After each SCC event, players will be awarded Grand Prix points based on the following formula:
- Performance relative to one's rating: Points equal to 1/2 the average difference between the tournament performace rating and pre-tournament rating for all events in the chess season weighted by the number of games in each event thereby giving longer tournaments more weight than short ones. The resultant number could be positive or negative (usually in the range of -50 to +50 but most likely between -30 and +30).
- Actual tournament performance: Points equal to the average rating adjustment in all events played (which typically ranges between -40 and +40 but will be more likely -20 to +20 for most players). To properly balance long and short tournaments, scores are also weighted in proportion to games played in the tournament.
- Participation in tournaments: 5 points per event played in (regardless of the number of games). This factor biases the results toward players who play all the events, even if they don't play all the rounds.
- Participation in games: 1 point per round played (including TD byes)
- Win/loss record: 2 points per win and 1 point per draw. This obviously benefits players who score more points!
