Friendly Chess Since 1960

The Scarborough Chess Club

We are a volunteer-run chess club located in the Scarborough area of Toronto. Founded in 1960, the Scarborough Chess Club is proud to be one of the longest running community-based chess clubs in Canada.

Affiliated with the Chess Federation of Canada, we welcome players of all ages and strengths. Open for casual play as well as regular Chess Federation of Canada-rated tournaments, the club provides chess pieces, boards and clocks for all games.

Crosstables for tournaments, starting with the 2006-07 Club Championships, can be found on the Results page.

Modification to 2011-2012 Schedule
After reviewing the remaining weeks of the SCC 2011-12 schedule, the club executive is making a small change to the upcoming schedule of tournaments. Our initial plan was to finish the year with a 10-round Swiss. However, this is a rather long tournament to end the year especially given that attendance in June tends to fall off a bit because of vacations etc. Consequently, we're going to follow the following revised schedule:

Winter's End Swiss (5 rounds, February 16 to March 15)
Club Championship (9 rounds, March 22 to May 24)
Spring into Summer Swiss (5 rounds, May 31 to June 28)

Club Championship Qualification Rules

The Scarborough Chess Club Championship (round robin) tournament is open to the 9 top-rated SCC members who have played in at least 10 games since the start of the chess season in September 2011. The 10th player in the round robin is the top finisher in the 2010-2011 Club Championship Reserves "A" Section who does not qualify by rating (they also have to satisfy the 10-game activity rule). Here's a table showing the 20 top-rated players plus information on whether they have qualified by number of games played and if not, how many games they need to play to qualify. As of February 2 (round 5 of the Jack Frost Swiss), there are 7 games to be played before the club championship. Players not qualifying to play in the round robin section have the opportunity to play in one of the two Reserves sections.

If it looks like you will qualify but you know that you're unable to commit to playing in the 9-round round robin because of work/family/other obligations, please let me ASAP (email Steve Karpik at skarpik@sympatico.ca).

New Tournament Rules

Two section experiment over, it's back to three sections

At the 2011 AGM it was decided to try out a new structure for our Thursday night Swiss tournaments.  It was decided to divide play into two sections (1800+ and U1800) but just for the Howard Ridout Swiss. Based on feedback from members to the club executive, it was decided that three sections were more appropriate and for the balance of this year, we will be using three sections: 1800+, U1800 and U1400 plus unrated.

Players within 100 points of the rating floor of a higher section may elect to play up a section (so players rated 1700 to 1799 can elect to play in the 1800+ section and those rated 1300 to 1399 can play in the U1800 section if they wish).  These sections are designed to ensure that club members have games that are competitive and exciting.

As always the club executive welcomes feedback from SCC members on the sections we use for our Swiss tournaments or on any other issue regarding how we organize ourselves as a club.

Chess in the Library

Chess in the Library

Back in the early summer of 2009, Scarborough Chess Club member Yuanling Yuan launched an innovative program called Chess in the Library. The idea was to promote chess -- Blitz, casual play, CFC-rated games -- at a grass roots level in libraries. Yuanling envisaged the program as a chess incubator, starting with Saturday programs at one site, the Brookbanks library at 210 Brookbanks Drive, in June 2009. The program gained the support of a dedicated group of volunteers and has since spread to several other libraries. The program has been an enormous success. To learn more about the program, visit the Chess in Library web site or Yuanling's blog. The SCC is proud to see such an innovative program come from one of our members.

When Are We Open?

The club is open on Thursday evenings. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and tournament play starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. Because of a scheduling conflict at the Birkdale Community Centre, the club is closed on May 10, 2012. Regular play resumes the next week on May 17, 2012.

We also take a summer vacation in the months of July and August. For more details on upcoming events, please see our Events page. Also check out our crosstables and tournament results.

Need a Bye?
If you need a bye for a particular game, it's no problem but we need to be notified in advance.  Either email regrets@scarboroughchessclub.ca by 5:00 p.m. on game day or call one of the Executive Members before 6:00 p.m. by phone.  Your Scarborough Chess Club business card has all the phone numbers of the Executive Members.

Failure to notify the club of an absence will result in a forfeited game and you will not automatically be paired for the next round. Players who contact us in time are given a 1/2 point bye except in the last round of a tournament where a 0 point bye will be assigned.
